Vuelta a Espana to host new La Course style race
The Vuelta a Espana is to follow the lead of the Tour de France and host a women's one-day race on the last day of the men's three week grand tour. The race is along the same vein as La Course by the Tour de France hosted for the first time this year.
The French race was deemed a success with victory going to the hot favourite Marianne Vos, and now the new Spanish race will hopefully boost women's cycling in Spain, which has been on a downward spiral the last few years.
The new race will be held on the Paseo de la Castellana boulevard in Madrid, and will likely be a similar criterium-style race with a sprint finish likely. Javier Guillen, the Vuelta race director, stated the event would happen for the first time in 2015.
It has been a good week in general for women's cycling, after the Tour of California announced it was to add a three-day women's stage race during the 2015 edition of the race on Monday. These two new races will be added to the list of exciting new opportunities for female cyclists such as La Course and the Women's Tour in Great Britain.
