Giro d'Italia 2014 - Stage 14
The 2014 Giro d'Italia's fourteenth stage was a mountainous route with a summit finish. The route travelled 164 kilometres from Aglie to Oropa and would be another general classification showdown. Rigoberto Uran of Omega Pharma-Quickstep was the maglia rosa going into the stage, and he would hope to retain and maybe even consolidate his lead in the leader's jersey.
The stage suited a breakaway, and a huge twenty one man group went clear. Enrico Battaglin of Bardiani-CSF was present, as well as a Sky duo Dario Cataldo and Edvald Boasson Hagen, also Valerio Agnoli (Astana), Julien Vermote (Omega Pharma-Quickstep), Ivan Santaromita (Orica-GreenEDGE), Tim Wellens of Lotto-Belisol and Emanuelle Sella of Androni Giocattoli, among others.
Tim Wellens set out on his assault on the King of the Mountains competition by attacking the climbs, while a crash in the peloton caused Kosta Siutsou (Sky Procycling) and Pieter Weening (Orica-GreenEDGE) to abandon the race. Omega Pharma-Quickstep was setting the pace not to chase down the breakaway but keep them in check, making sure none of the riders could gain a huge advantage.
On the descent of the Belmonte Pass, Pierre Rolland and Bjorn Thurau of Europcar and Nathan Haas and Ryder Hesjedal of Garmin-Sharp tried their hand in attacking, and the breakaway had started to splinter. Albert Timmer of Giant-Shimano tried attacking, but Sky's Dario Cataldo and Colombia's Jarlinson Pantano caught and passed him.
Enrico Battaglin battled up to the duo along with Timmer and Lampre-Merida's Jan Polanc, but it was Battaglin who won the sprint ahead of Dario Cataldo and Pantano, to give Bardiani-CSF their second win and in as many days. Rigoberto Uran lost time to his rivals, including 29 seconds to Nairo Quintana, and was also dropped by the likes of Domenico Pozzovivo and Wilco Kelderman, but despite this, he remained in control of the maglia rosa.
