Giro d'Italia 2014 - Stage 13
The thirteenth stage of the 2014 Giro d'Italia was a flat 157 kilometre race from Fossano to Rivarolo Canavese. The sprinters would be looking to come to the fore now the mountains had died down for a day, and Nacer Bouhanni would be looking to continue his post-Kittel sprint dominance with another win. Giacomo Nizzolo and Luka Mezgec would be a couple of his main challengers.
The day's breakaway got away very quickly, Jackson Rodriguez of Androni Giocattoli was joined by Marco Canola of Bardiani-CSF, Gert Dockx (Lotto-Belisol), Angelo Tulik (Europcar) and Jeffry Johan Romero (Colombia). They were let go easily, but FDJ.fr, the team of Nacer Bouhanni, wanted to make sure they were not given too much leeway.
The rain once again effected the peloton, but rather than directly causing a crash, it was the rain jackets that caused problems. Vladimir Gusev got his jacket caught in his back wheel and subsequently crashed. There was a hailstorm that just missed the peloton, but the commisaires nevertheless slowed the race down while they got through the aftermath.
The peloton hit the finishing circuit over a minute and a half down on the breakaway, and although FDJ.fr were chasing hard, not many teams really wanted to help Bouhanni win another stage. The breakaway had shrunk to only three riders, Rodriguez, Tulik and Canola who rode hard with a minute gap. Canola attacked but his companions followed.
Garmin-Sharp finally picked up the chase, but it was too late. Marco Canola went for it in the last corner, Rodriguez and Tulik couldn't catch him. Rodriguez took second with Tulik rounding out the podium. Nacer Bouhanni lead the peloton over for fourth place to extend his lead in the points classification over the likes of Nizzolo and Mezgec.
